Myriam L. Monsalve-Serna, MS. Ed, LMFT

For the last four years, Myriam Monsalve-Serna has served as a key decision- maker within the Miami System of Care transformation program. Myriam is a team leader within the FACES program, which is a grantee of the Center for Mental Health Service (US Department of Health and Human Services). She is responsible for assisting leadership, management, staff, families, youth, contractors and all other system partners with culturally and linguistically competent practices in all aspects of the system of care.

Myriam Monsalve-Serna is the founder and President of the Center for Community Learning, Inc. (CLC). The CLC resulted from Myriam’s work as an Annie E. Casey Foundation Children and Family Fellowship recipient. During her fellowship, Myriam focused on expanding families’ informal support networks and connecting families with formal resources. Specifically, Myriam co-created a comprehensive curriculum to help Promotoras to address mental health disparities.

To continue this work, Myriam created and designed the CLC to focus more intensely on capacity building with Natural Helpers/Community Health Workers/Promotoras, and Peer Specialists.   Funders with whom she has worked include the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the AECF Fellows Network, the Dade Community Foundation, ConnectFamilias, South Florida Behavioral Health Network, University of South Florida, United Way, and the Florida Department of Children and Families. As part of the goal of building the capacity of family members and paraprofessionals, the Center has been providing training and technical assistance in Miami, Tampa, Jacksonville, Hartford, Philadelphia, New Britain, Chicago, and Indianapolis.

Myriam has also been a co-presenter and co-trainer for Natural Helpers in numerous local, state, and national conferences and workshops. She provided technical assistance and consulting services to community organizations and neighborhood residents seeking to develop and implement culturally competent systems of family support and care.

Myriam was born in Colombia, South America. She received her degree as a psychologist from the Universidad Nacional in Bogota, Colombia and her M.S.Ed in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. She holds a License as a marriage and family therapist for the state of Florida.
